Why Women Receive Breast Reduction (Mammaplasty)
Large breasts are not always a blessing. While every year thousands of women seek out Breast Augmentation to increase their chest size, many ladies find themselves needing to do just the opposite. Large breasts can cause a myriad of physical issues including back pain, shoulder pain, and breathing difficulties. An oversized chest can pull, bounce, and shake, making physical activities and exercise uncomfortable. The size of a woman’s chest can also draw unwanted attention, making certain situations both awkward and embarrassing. Appropriately fitting clothing and swimwear can be difficult to find. The physical and emotional strain from a large chest can severely impact a woman’s self-esteem and confidence.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
A Mammaplasty, also known as a Breast Reduction, is an invasive procedure designed to reduce the volume of a large chest, as well as eliminate sagging and slumping tissues. Large breasts are prone to effects of gravity: sinking, pulling, and losing elasticity over time. As the breasts begin to descend, the areola can stretch and lose its shape, as well. During a mammaplasty, excess skin is eliminated and tissue is raised. The areola can be removed as well, with the size adjusted, and placed in a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position. The results from a Breast Reduction in Indianapolis or Santa Rosa can be life changing; restoring a woman’s poise and self-assurance. Women undergoing Mammaplasty are considered among the most satisfied cosmetic surgery patients.
A Breast Reduction can be performed at any age, although the best candidate will be a woman with fully developed breast tissue. Other key factors for a good mammaplasty candidate will include:
- Pendulous breasts
- One breast is larger than the other
- Irritated skin in the crease below the breasts
- Discomfort makes for restricted physical activities
- Shoulder indentations from tight bra straps
- Dissatisfaction with breast size

Along with his talented team of Board Certified surgeons, he has developed an innovative surgical technique that significantly improves the results, shortens recovery time, and lowers the complications associated with the Mammaplasty procedure.
The goal of Dr. Chernoff’s Mammaplasty is always a natural-looking, proportionate chest. He understands the balance women want to achieve: beautifully shaped breasts that are not painful or shameful. Using his artistic eye, he will create a pleasing silhouette that is flattering for each patient. When needed, Dr. Chernoff’s Mammaplasty can be combined with the Breast Lift procedure to provide patients with optimal results.
The Mammaplasty Procedure
Breast Reduction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure at a nearby, accredited day surgery center. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and will take between three and four hours to complete, depending on the patient’s individual needs.
Dr. Chernoff begins the Breast Reduction procedure by making three incisions: around the areola, vertically from the bottom edge of the areola down to the crease under the breast, and following the natural curve of the breast crease. Once these have been made, Dr. Chernoff will start by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. Next, the nipple and areola will be shifted to a higher position on the chest. Since large breasts can stretch the areola, Dr. Chernoff will meticulously reduce their size before adjusting the placement. The skin and tissue is then brought together and the breast is reshaped. Dr. Chernoff may include a Liposuction technique to further sculpt the contour under the arms.
Recovery from a Breast Reduction
A Breast Reduction is performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients should expect their recovery to take between seven and ten days. There may be some discomfort and an ache in the breasts, initially. Dr. Chernoff will provide the appropriate pain medications to keep patients comfortable. To assist in the healing process, the patient will need to wear a specialized bra for the first several days.
The Mammaplasty will normally result in a visible scar. This will travel around the areola, downward, and along the breast crease in an inverted T-shape. As time goes by, the scarring will fade; although, it may always be visible.
Patients normally feel well enough to return to work in a week or less after their Breast Reduction procedure. Exercise, heavy lifting, and strenuous activities should be postponed until at least four to six weeks have passed, after which time all normal activities can be resumed.
The Risks of a Breast Reduction
Complications associated with the Breast Reduction are minimal. As it is an invasive procedure, problems may occur on rare occasions. These can include infection, scarring, excessive bleeding, delayed wound healing, and chest asymmetry. Only trust your body to the best plastic surgeon available; this will guarantee your lowest chance for complications and your best chance for patient satisfaction.
