Fat Removal Beneath the Chin
Many men and women come to our Indianapolis plastic surgery practice with concerns about a double chin, which can be caused by genetics, certain medications, weight gain and loss cycles, normal aging and/or the patient’s face and jaw structure. Even if not caused by aging, a double chin can often make an individual look older than their actual age. We perform a minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedure called Submental Liposuction (submental refers to the area beneath the chin) that can simply and easily eliminate a double chin with minimal bruising and swelling. Can Submental Liposuction Be Performed With Other Treatments?
Yes! While Submental Liposuction can certainly be performed as a standalone procedure, Dr. Chernoff routinely combines Submental Liposuction with other procedures such as FaceTite RF, Ellevate, Platysmaplasty, Y LIFT, Neck Lift, and Morpheus8 to achieve the best results. FaceTite Radiofrequency (RF)
Some of our Submental Liposuction patients add a nonsurgical radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening treatment called FaceTite Radiofrequency, which uses a radiofrequency probe to shrink the skin beneath the chin and jawline. Learn more about FaceTite RF.
Ellevate Suture Suspension
Some patients with a double chin also lack definition in the jaw and/or have glands that prevent a defined jawline. In this case, Dr. Chernoff might suggest Ellevate, which is a suture suspension system used beneath the chin to lift and support tissues and glands. Ellevate can easily be performed at the same time as a Submental Liposuction to provide best results.
Platysmaplasty – Neck Muscle Tightening
For patients with a double chin and neck sagging, Dr. Chernoff can add a platysmaplasty, which is a surgical procedure that tightens the long muscle visible along the front of the neck (a sagging platysma is often identified as a “turkey neck”). This procedure is done via a tiny incision beneath the chin that is nearly invisible after healing.
Y LIFT Jawline & Chin Enhancement
Dr. Chernoff is one of very few plastic surgeons that are trained and certified to perform the Y LIFT, a nonsurgical treatment to improve the structure and contours of the jaw, chin, and face through the use of large molecule dermal fillers strategically injected along the chin bone and jawbone, the result of which is an improvement in the structure and projection of the chin. Dr. Chernoff can also use this treatment to improve the contours of the face via the Y LIFT.
Morpheous8 – Microneedle RF
Many patients undergoing Submental Liposuction for a double chin can benefit from a skin tightening once the fat has been removed. For this purpose, Dr. Chernoff utilizes Morpheus8, which is a deep microneedle radiofrequency treatment. Morpheus8 can be performed with a Submental Liposuction procedure and/or as a treatment series after submental liposuction to improve skin elasticity by stimulating collagen production.
Am I A Good Candidate For Submental Liposuction?
Healthy adult men and women with fat beneath the skin, who have good skin elasticity in the area and who desire that only the chin area be treated, are generally good candidates for this outpatient cosmetic surgery procedure. Those with jowling, a loss of facial volume, poor skin elasticity and/or hanging skin in the neck are better served by an Endoscopic Neck Lift, Mid-Facelift, or Deep Plane Face & Neck Lift combined with a Submental Liposuction.
How Long Does A Submental Liposuction Procedure Take?
When performed as a standalone procedure, a Submental Liposuction takes about an hour. For patients with significant amounts of fat or who have elected to add if Dr. other treatments, like Ellevate, Neck Muscle Tightening, or others, the procedure will take a bit longer.
Recovery from Submental Liposuction
Patients will see a more contoured jawline and chin silhouette after a Submental Liposuction procedure once normal swelling and bruising have subsided. At the end of the procedure, Dr. Chernoff will have placed a chin compression garment, which the patient will wear 24/7 to help with healing and final contour. After one week, you will wear the chin compression garment only at night.
It is normal to experience bruising and swelling after a Submental Liposuction surgery. Healing time is affected by your diet, activity level, amount of fat that was removed, and your ability to rest and recover. Patients that follow our postoperative plan and guide have a faster recovery and less swelling.
