No doubt, you’ve heard stories about medical breakthroughs involving stem cells in recent years. But are you aware that stem cells are now being used in cosmetic surgery? There has been much work done on stem cell populations, particularly in fat, and although progress with stem cells is in the early stages, I am already one of the principal players in this new segment of cosmetic medicine. I am doing much more fat transfer now, both into the face for volume replacement as well as into selected body areas such as the buttocks, breasts, face and the back of the hands. Your liposuctioned fat is a great source for stem cells. We have the technology to harvest fat from areas of your body where you don’t want it (for example, the abdomen, thighs and buttocks) and separate out the stem cells. This enriched fat can then be injected to plump up areas of the body such as those listed above. The presence of stem cells helps the fat to remain in the injected area much better than fat alone. Published in the December issue of The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, a study performed by Dr. Elise Olsen and colleagues assessed 381 women with female pattern hair loss, along with 76 women without FPHL, to see what, if any, role iron deficiency plays. The researchers used two different definitions of iron deficiency. A ferritin level less than or equal to 15 µg/L, and the second, less than or equal to 40 µg/L. They found no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of iron deficiency among premenopausal or postmenopausal women with FPHL and the control subjects (those women without hair loss). “Clearly, although we have shown no difference in the prevalence of iron deficiency between women with or without hair loss, there remains the need for more definitive studies that evaluate whether correction of iron deficiency in women with hair loss actually affects hair growth; and for that, a carefully controlled, placebo-, age-, and menstrual status-matched study of sufficient numbers using a standardized definition of iron deficiency needs to be performed,” the authors wrote. If you or someone you love suffers from hair loss, please call us for a private consultation. Our Indianapolis cosmetic surgery practice helps both men and women with hair restoration concerns. “Surprisingly, the results showed that in over 90% of the patients studied, the zinc/phytase combination resulted in a remarkable improved responsiveness to treatment of blepharospasm using the same amount of botulinum toxin as previously used,” said Soparkar. “The toxins seemed to have greater effect and last longer. Potentially, this could mean using less toxin, offering patients financial savings, greater safety, and more consistent results.” If the prescription is sensibly priced, it would create an overall savings for patients who use Botox for wrinkle reduction, as less Botox will be necessary to achieve the same results and the results will last longer. I’ll keep you updated as soon as I hear further news on this topic. To your health & beauty,
Silicone injections first became popular in the 1950s, when they were injected into breasts as a sort of augmentation-without-an implant. Unfortunately, the injections caused infections, deformities and bumps and were eventually banned by the FDA. Because micro-droplet injections for scars are not banned by the FDA, however, some physicians continue to inject silicone. Because it lasts forever, silicone does not adapt to aging tissue. The only way to reverse the damage incurred—with a surgical procedure, which might not remove all the silicone or correct the visible effects. Lisa Rinna recently underwent surgery to remove the silicone in her lips, which were injected in the ’80s. Our plastic surgery practice has a plethora of FDA approved dermal fillers in Indianapolis. Collagen lip augmentation is a much more reliable result than silicone ever was. Sculptra Aesthetic is another option—not for the lips, but an excellent filler for the cheeks and other facial areas. If you hear from a friend or family member that they are considering silicone injections, please share this blog post with them. It could save them a great deal of discomfort, wasted money and very disappointing results. To your health & beauty, |
